Large Rookwood Vase Cherry Blossoms Laura Fry 1883. Nice-sized early rookwood vase-8 inches tall and 6 1/2 inches at its widest-decorated in cherry blossoms by laura fry in 1883, only the fourth year of the pottery’s production. Very heavy slip decoration on a smear (or ‘dull’) finish is further accented by gold splashes. The exterior has a kind of hammered metal look, and the baes pottery was hand-thrown on a wheel.Marks on bottom include ‘large rookwood vase cherry blossoms laura fry 1883 rookwood‘ in block letters, the date 1883, ‘y’ (for yellow clay), the ‘kiln’ mark (only used this one year), shape number 94b adn the artist’s cipher. Condition notes overall very good condtiion for a 127 year old piece of this delicacy. No chips, cracks or repairs. There are two or three minute flakes off high points of the slip decoration a small thin spot in the glaze on the rim-possibly in the making and there is a clay separation on the bottom (visible in the last picture)-most likely due to shrinkage in the kiln-that does not go through to the inside. (we were originally supsicious about a repaired drill hole, but an acetone check inside and out proved this not to be the case).
